How much does a website cost in Malaysia? (2026, honest numbers)

Short answer: anywhere from about RM1,200 to well past RM20,000 over two years, depending on how you buy it.

That range is useless on its own, so here is the long answer. There are four common ways to get a business website in Malaysia in 2026. Each has a different price shape: some charge you up front, some charge you monthly, and some charge you in your own time. We will go through all four, then put them side by side in a two-year cost table.

One thing before we start: we run WebX, a website subscription service. It appears as one of the four options below. We will tell you exactly what it includes and excludes, and we will also tell you when the other options are the better choice. This article is meant to be useful even if you end up hiring a freelancer.

Option 1: Hire a freelancer (RM2,500-8,000 up front)

This is the classic route. You find a freelance web designer, brief them, and they build you a custom site, usually on WordPress.

Typical numbers:

  • Build: RM2,500-8,000 for a standard business site of 5-10 pages. Below RM2,500 exists, but at that price you are often getting a template with your logo swapped in.
  • Hosting: RM100-500 per year, which you usually pay yourself.
  • Domain: roughly RM40-120 per year depending on whether you pick .com or .com.my.
  • Maintenance: often not quoted at all. When it is, expect a few hundred ringgit a year for updates and backups. When it is not, small changes get billed ad hoc, or the site quietly goes stale.

The honest caveat: quality varies wildly. A good freelancer at RM5,000 can outdo an agency at RM15,000. A bad one can leave you with a broken site and an unanswered phone. The price tells you very little; the portfolio and the references tell you more.

Also budget your own time. Custom builds need your input: content rounds, revision rounds, approval rounds. Two to six weeks of back and forth is normal, and projects stall most often because the customer side runs out of steam writing content.

Option 2: Hire an agency (RM8,000 and up)

Agencies do what freelancers do, with more people, more process, and more accountability. You get proper project management, design revisions, sometimes copywriting and photography.

Expect RM8,000 as a realistic floor for a small-business site, and RM15,000-50,000+ once branding, custom features, or e-commerce enter the picture. Hosting and maintenance are often sold as a separate retainer.

This is the right option if your website is genuinely central to your business, you sell online at volume, you need custom systems, or your brand justifies the investment. For a simple business that mainly needs to look credible when someone Googles them, it is usually more machine than the job requires.

Option 3: DIY builder, Wix, Squarespace and friends (RM60-110/month)

The builders advertise low starting prices, but for a proper business plan, your own domain connected, no platform ads, expect RM60-110 per month when billed properly. That is RM720-1,320 per year, every year.

The bigger cost is not on the invoice. You do everything: pick the template, fight the layout, write the copy, resize the photos, set up the domain, and fix the site when it looks wrong on mobile. For some owners that is a satisfying weekend project. For most, it is 20-40 hours of unfamiliar work producing a site that looks like exactly what it is.

DIY makes sense if you enjoy this kind of work, your budget is genuinely tight, and your time is genuinely free. All three need to be true.

Option 4: Done-for-you subscription (WebX, RM599/year)

This is the model we run, so read this section knowing we are biased. Here is exactly what it is.

You pay RM599 per year, all-in. For that, WebX builds you a 4-page website, Home, About, Products/Services, Contact by default, and hosts it at yourbusiness.webx.my. Hosting, SSL and the build are all inside the one price. When you want something changed, you do not log into anything: you send us the change request and we make it. Change requests are unlimited under fair use, which means changes to text, images, colours and content within your existing pages. Most changes are done within one business day.

How can it be this cheap when a freelancer charges RM2,500? Because AI does the building and handles most change requests, with a human stepping in when a request needs judgment. We would rather tell you that plainly than have you wonder what the catch is.

What it deliberately excludes:

  • No online store, booking system or member login. WebX sites are simple, fast, informational sites. If you sell, your site links out to where selling actually works, Shopee, TikTok Shop, WhatsApp.
  • No do-it-yourself editing. There is no builder to log into. If you want hands-on control of your site, this is the wrong product and a DIY builder will suit you better.
  • No forms. Contact happens through WhatsApp buttons, phone, email and map links, the channels Malaysian customers actually use.

Optional add-ons, priced separately: a managed custom domain at RM199/year (registered in your name), extra pages at RM99 each (each extra page also adds RM99 to your yearly renewal), a one-time full design refresh at RM199, and a ZIP export of your site at RM99 if you ever want to take it elsewhere.

The two-year cost table

Two years is the honest window, because up-front and recurring models only compare fairly over time.

OptionTwo-year money costYour hoursOngoing changes
FreelancerRM2,800-9,200 (build + hosting + domain)10-30 hrs of briefing and content roundsAd hoc, billed or goodwill

Ranges are typical 2026 market figures; individual quotes vary.

What makes prices balloon

Whichever route you take, the same three things inflate a website bill:

  1. E-commerce. The moment "sell online" enters the brief, you add payment gateways, product management, shipping logic and security. A RM4,000 project becomes RM12,000. If you are a small business, ask seriously whether a marketplace store plus a simple site does the same job for a fraction of the cost.
  2. Custom features. Booking calendars, calculators, member areas, integrations with other software. Each one is real development work, and each one needs maintenance forever.
  3. Content rounds. Every extra revision cycle costs someone time. Projects quoted at three revisions that run to eight either get re-billed or the relationship sours. Having your content ready, words, photos, prices, is the single cheapest way to keep any web project on budget.

How to choose

  • Your website is core to your business, with custom needs and real budget: agency, or a proven senior freelancer.
  • You want a custom site and can vet the person properly: freelancer, check live sites they built, and ask who handles changes next year.
  • You have more time than money and enjoy the tinkering: DIY builder.
  • You want a simple, credible site that someone else builds, hosts and updates, at a price that never surprises you: that is the job WebX was built for.

If you want to talk it through, including whether WebX is the wrong fit for you, which we will say plainly, message us on WhatsApp or email michael@webx.my.
