Do you need a website when you already have Instagram and Facebook?

Short answer: not always. Anyone who tells you every business must have a website today is probably selling websites. We sell websites, so let us give you the honest version instead.

For plenty of Malaysian businesses, social media is where the customers actually are. Instagram, Facebook and TikTok are where people discover a new cafe, see your latest work, and DM you to ask "still available?". If that machine is running well for you, a website will not change your life this month.

But social media has four gaps, and they are the same four gaps for every business. When one of them starts costing you customers, that is the moment a website earns its place. Here is how to tell.

What social media already does well

Give credit where it is due. Social is unbeatable at discovery. A good reel travels further than any web page ever will. It shows you are alive and active, today's post, yesterday's delivery, this morning's stock. And the DM-to-WhatsApp habit is already how Malaysians buy.

If you are a food stall, a home baker, or anyone whose business is visual and impulse-driven, social alone can genuinely carry you for a while. That is not a failure. That is using the right tool.

The four things social cannot do

1. Show up when people search Google

When someone's aircond dies, they do not scroll Instagram. They type "aircond service Puchong" into Google. Same for "tuition centre near me", "printing shop Kota Kinabalu", "wiring contractor Klang". These are searches with money behind them, the person has a problem and wants it solved today.

Instagram and Facebook pages rarely appear well for these searches. A website, even a simple one with your services and location written out properly, is what gives Google something to show. Pair it with a Google Business Profile and you cover the two places buyers with intent actually look.

2. Give you a home you own

Your Instagram following sits on rented land. The algorithm decides who sees your posts, and reach has been sliding for years, ask anyone whose page reached thousands in 2019 and reaches hundreds now. Accounts get hacked. Accounts get restricted for reasons nobody explains, and the appeal button goes nowhere.

None of this means abandon social. It means do not let it be the only place your business exists. A website is the one address that cannot be taken away by a policy change you never read.

3. Look credible to bigger customers

Walk-in customers judge you by your food or your work. Corporate customers judge you by paper. When an office manager needs three quotes for servicing, when a company vets a vendor, when a school checks out a supplier, someone types your business name into Google. If nothing comes up but a Facebook page last updated in March, you look smaller than you are.

A clean website with your services, your background and your contact details is often the difference between being shortlisted and being skipped. It is the digital version of having a proper business card and a signboard.

4. Put everything in one place

Your menu is in Instagram highlights. Your price list is in a pinned Facebook post. Your opening hours are in a comment reply from last Raya. Every day you retype the same answers in DMs.

A website is one link that organises all of it: what you do, what it costs, where you are, when you are open, and a WhatsApp button for everything else. You answer each question once, properly, and then just send the link.

The pairing that actually works

This is not social media versus website. The setup that works for Malaysian small businesses is a relay:

Bio link → website → WhatsApp.

Social does the discovery, the reel, the post, the share. The link in your bio takes interested people to your website, which answers the standard questions and shows you are legitimate. The WhatsApp button on the website closes the deal, person to person, the way business here has always been done.

Each part does one job. Nobody has to give up posting, and nobody has to learn a new way of selling.

Three businesses, three different answers

The nasi lemak stall. Honestly? Social and a Google Maps listing may be enough for now. Your customers buy with their eyes and their feet. Where a website starts to matter is when you chase catering and corporate orders, an office ordering 80 packs wants to see a menu and a track record on something that looks official, not scroll your highlights.

The aircond servicing company. You need a website first, before you need more followers. Your customers are not browsing, they are searching, urgently, with a broken unit in a hot house. And the maintenance contracts that pay steadily come from offices and property managers who check whether you look like a real company. This is the clearest case there is.

The tuition centre. Parents research. They want subjects, levels, fees, schedule, location and who the teachers are, and they forward links to other parents in WhatsApp groups before deciding. A website that lays all this out does your explaining for you, in every group chat you will never see. Social shows the classroom energy; the website carries the facts.

The pattern: the more your customer searches, compares or vets before buying, the sooner a website pays for itself. The more they buy on impulse from a post, the longer social alone can hold.

What you do not need

You do not need a big site, an online store, or a content management system to learn. For most small businesses, four solid pages do the job: Home, About, Services, Contact.

That is what WebX builds. RM599 a year gets you a 4-page website, built for you and hosted on your own webx.my address, with unlimited fair-use change requests, new prices, new photos, new hours, just message us and we handle it. You never touch a website builder. Your social media keeps doing what it does; the website quietly covers the four gaps above.
